A Recap of Boston’s take on Crywank’s First US tour!
Crywank’s first US Tour is happening and boy was I and the crowd excited! They were Touring with musical artist, Chastity. Despite Crywank’s drummer being mia due to international traveling issues, the show must go on. Which it did with Crywank’s lead vocalist borrowing both the amazing talents of Chastity’s bassist and drummer.
Along with them were Boston-based artists Dino Gala and Paperlady opening for the performers.
First up was a local band that goes by the name Paperlady. Along with the surreal atmosphere that was created from the rhythmic sounds of deep bass, high snares, and siren-like vocals you felt almost as if you were in a trance from start to finish. To end their set, the lead vocal ended with screams that echoed down your spine. As if her stress and raw emotions were being exhausted to give you one unforgettable moment that would etch its way into just about anyone's heart. You could see their designated photographer running through the audience to capture this spectacle.
Next up was the alternative/indie band, Dino Gala. In the beginning, having technical difficulties but later gave a very personal emotion-filled performance. As you watched them on stage you would see the lead singer and guitarist wandering slowly with each lyric, head down almost as if nothing else existed but that moment. Soon to follow was the other guitarist, lying their heads upon each other in a gentle embrace. It felt as if you not only understood the band from the lyrics but from their presence. It was almost like a form of intimacy shared with the rest of the venue. Indescribable.
Chastity is next up, performing songs from their latest project “Suffer Summer” and many of their hits. They came on stage strong-minded, and confident, and left knowing they won over the hearts of many. From the performance of the energetic guitarist, leaping and longing as you did as a troubled teen in private to your favorite musician. You know you’ve imagined yourself shredding guitar, imitating Animal from the muppets on drums, or leading the show with your self-expressive and relatable words. Well that was what was given by the band not missing a single note.
Finishing off the night and staying past the venue's curfew was the main act, Crywank. Again, unfortunately, it was mostly a solo act while performing in Boston, due to their drummer not receiving their visa in time. From the tone of his voice and his expression, he enable us quickly to share empathy when he admitted to being very anxious. Crywank is a very niche band. Not many might even give them a chance due to their unique approach to vocals and depressing lyrics. For those who do though, it seems as if his words share a piece with your own experiences. Vulnerability seemed like no stranger when sharing the meaning behind many songs and issues he faced such as depression and gender identity. You could hear the crowd roaring and cheering him on after and during each track. We could not stop eating it up! As it got later he even told the crowd he does not make setlists. All song choices are impromptu which led to him asking for song recs. You heard songs called from all over the auditorium, Titles such as “Privately Owned Spiral Galaxy”, “Thomas Saunders Lloyd Webber”, “Leech Boy” to name a few. Ending the night with “I Am Shit” Along with college students recording the show on their 3DS consoles. It would be a night for many of these college and high school students to remember. Not only due to the relatable and breathtaking acts but the environment that was created by the fans. Every turn you saw another emo, goth, alternative styled outfit, and colored hair. Which is something that can feel like home when it feels all too familiar to yourself.
